Writing on iPhone and iPad

Diarly on iOS allows the same powerful formatting options as it does on Mac. This guide explains how you can write and format your entries on iOS.

Most of the available editing options are displayed in the Editor Toolbar, located above your keyboard.

⌨️ Keyboard shortcuts are available on iPad. For the full list, visit the keyboard shortcuts article, or press and hold ⌘ to display all the shortcuts available.

Editor Toolbar

When you start writing, the editor toolbar will be shown above the keyboard, with the following options. To see all the options, please slide to scroll horizontally on this toolbar.

Insert:

  • Insert file or image
  • Insert sketch
  • Insert audio note
  • Insert time separator
  • Insert location
  • Insert weather
  • Insert link
  • Insert tag

Line modifiers affect the entire line:

  • Header
  • Unordered (bullet) list
  • Ordered (numbered) lit
  • Task or to-do list
  • Quotation
  • Indent left
  • Indent right

Inline modifiers affect the selected text:

  • Bold
  • Italic
  • Underline
  • Striketrough
  • Monospace (code)
  • Highlight

Navigation:

  • Undo
  • Redo
  • Line up
  • Line Down
  • Left
  • Right

Auto completion

The editor supports multiple auto-completion options:

  • Type [[ to link to other entries and notes. Select one from the list, or keep typing a name or date to find the note you want to link to.
  • Type : followed by the name of an emoji to insert an emoji, like so: :smile: 😄
  • Type / to open the insert menu, such as the current time, location, weather, and more.
