How to import journals

Mac

To import journals or entries on Mac, from the Menu Bar go to File > Import. There, you will find the available options:

  • Markdown (Diarly)
  • DayOne
  • MacJournal
  • Journey
  • Momento
  • Chronicle
  • CSV

When importing, you will be shown additional information about the entries that will be imported. If you are happy with the structure, press import. Multiple entries for the same day will be merged into one, using time separators.

iOS

To import journals or entries on iOS, go to More , and then Import.

Markdown Importer

Exporting to markdown allows you to create backups that you can easily import later.

This option imports a zip archive containing .md files. You can check the structure of valid import files by viewing how Diarly exports your entries. If you already have a journal in text files, you can format them using the structure outlined above, to import them to Diarly.

DayOne Importer

Text/Markdown Files

This simple importer allows you to import plain text files into Diarly. If the text file will have the date in first line it will be imported as daily note, otherwise it will be imported as note. The plain text files can have .md or .txt file extension. Our Reddit users tested the import with notes exported from Bear App, and verified that it works as expected.

Please notice this importer should not be used with Diarly export, as it will miss important metadata information which is not part of the note text.

Other apps and formats

  • MacJournal (.rtf or .txt)
  • Journey (.zip)
  • Momento
  • WrittenDown: Big thanks to Mike Terhar for creating a WD importer.

If the importer you want isn't available yet, or if you'd like a more detailed explanation on how to use one of the above, you can request it. Find the request form on Mac in the Menu Bar, under File > Import, and on iOS, under More > Import. Alternatively, you can contact us via email, Twitter DMs, Facebook Messenger, Instagram DMs, or on r/DiarlyApp.
